A KOALA AND I TRUSTED EACH OTHER

Our small acreage forms part of one of the largest koala corridors in Australia. Each year, especially during mating season, a number of these endearing creatures pass through our property.
Due to the encroachment of suburbia, the koalas suffer from stress and its consequences. The threat of dogs, traffic, and fences decrease their resistance and make them more susceptible to a contagious disease that causes blindness, cystitis, and infertility.
As I was leaving home one day, I noticed a distressed koala walking around in circles. When our neighbors came home, they helped my family secure the animal. Attempts to confine him looked like a surreal dance with humans chasing a koala and a koala chasing humans.
Capturing a koala is never easy, because they have powerful, sharp claws. Since this one was nearly blind, each human was a potential tree to climb.
After we caught the koala, we contacted the wildlife authorities who operate on and nurse these animals back to health. The officers and volunteers perform miracles rehabilitating sick and injured animals and returning them to the wild.
Two weeks after the initial contact, the wildlife ranger said that the koala was ready to be returned to his familiar territory. The ranger placed the cage with the animal in it at the base of a large eucalyptus tree and opened the door.
Usually, a koala released in this manner will dash out and rapidly climb the nearest tree. But not this one. Instead of running away, he looked directly at me with his clear, doelike eyes. I stood transfixed in his gaze.
I'm sure he's saying, "Thank you," I thought.
The ranger reached out and scratched the koala's back. I watched as the koala climbed the tree slowly until he reached a safe height.
Still, he didn't leave, but stayed near our home for a number of days, bringing great delight and joy to my family and friends. The koala became such a familiar friend that we named him Sebastian.
It seemed to me that this whole episode was an exercise in which people and animals learned to trust one another. We were given a special opportunity to compensate for encroaching on the koala's territory by helping him get well. By staying nearby and letting us get to know him better, the animal expressed his gratitude by giving us the chance to commune with wildlife.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:
"What could you do to let others know that you're a friend to be relied on when they are in need?"

My angel cat is missing and I've never felt so empty. Please read this, maybe he will hear us and find his way home. Thanks.
Lost Mickey Mouse:
i have a hole in my heart
my body and my soul
he is my best friend
I wonder who is hurting more
me or him
he’s all alone out there
i am safe in here
he didn’t mean for this to happen
curious kitten
i want you to know, my little baby
i love you as much as a child
and i miss you
you were my missing link
my unconditional love
my loyal friend.
i am so sorry
please come home
let me help you find your way
stay strong and brave
i will find you and bring you home
and when i do
my life will be complete again
until then, know i love you so very much
you are special
one of a kind
nothing can keep you from me
come home -
i’ll be waiting.
