Do Pets Choose Your Dates and Mates?

We would like your thoughts on the topic of pets, dating, and gaining friendships based on how the pet views the person.

Blog Questions:

--Have you ever had to choose between a dog, cat, or other pet, and a potential mate? Why did you have to make this choice? Were you able to make compromises?

--Has a dog, cat, or other pet let you know that someone you thought you wanted to date, get serious about, or marry really wasn't right for you? Or wasn't a person to trust with your heart? What happened? Was the animal right about this person?

We're hoping this discussion will help more people understand the benefits of sharing their homes and their lives with an animal companion.

When I first got together with my current spouse, he HATED cats. I had two at the time and I relegated them to the great outdoors. They had been indoor/outdoor cats and didn't seem to mind too much. He said he found cats to be arrogant, stupid and infuriating. Dogs were MUCH better.

Even with such strong words I believed that he just needed to experience a relationship with a cat like I always have. I know that a cat will give back generously what you give to them. So I just kept my mouth shut and loved my cats.

Fast forward to 12 years later...We have 4 cats now. He plays games with them, baby-talks to them, strokes them, scratches them behind their ears and carries them around. We laugh and tell stories about them all the time. In the evenings, they will often choose his lap to sit on.

I'm sure he would never admit to being a "cat-lover" and in public will still refer to them as "stupid". But the cats and I aren't concerned. We know where his heart is and that's all that matters.

While I never was forced to choose between a person or my horses, (love me, love my horses) I HAVE had my mare let me know under no certain terms that some men were Not for me. It would take around 30 seconds for her to decide whether she liked 'him' or not. My husband right now passed the "Lynda Test" though. She nuzzled him, and tried to explain as only a horse can where she wanted to be scratched. He complied and she told me that "yes, this bald human is for you". Usually if she didn't care for them, she would shove them away from her stall door, or just turn around, presenting us with her big one ton rump. My mare was correct every single time !
